WARNING!
We get a lot of clients that have been scammed. Unfortunately, there are unscrupulous people who will pretend to have kittens when they do not. There are also expert Photoshop manipulators that alter their kitten or cat's pictures to enhance what they look like. For example, they change the color of their eyes, shorten their ears, enlarge their eyes and even lengthen their hair. Additionally, there are back yard breeders that do not care about the health or quality of their kittens and are breeding cats without concern about proper vetting or breeding to the standard. We developed this page to help you identify potential scams. We only hope that you find this information, before falling victim of one. RED FLAGS 1. Registration Is the kitten registered? When looking for a Persian kitten, is it registered with CFA, TICA, or FIFE? CFA, the Cat Fancier's Association, is the largest registry of pure bred cats. You can find the CFA website at https://cfa.org/. Kittens can only be registered if both parents are registered cats. Don't believe any story. You are paying for a Persian, you are looking for a cat that looks Persian, you are looking for the Persian temperment. Regsitered kittens will have registration papers even if they are sold as pets. Is the Cattery registered?
That's very easy to look up. https://cfa.org/breeder-search/ If the Cattery is not registered, then you are dealing with unregistered kittens and a possible scam. I had a conversation with a scammer once, I was pretending to want a kitten. When I asked why I couldn't find them on the CFA website, they answered "you don't know how to look". That was a lie! It's very easy to look and if not it's very easy for a breeder that is registered to provide documentation of their registry. Back Yard Breeders will sometimes buy a kitten as a pet, not neutered. They will then breed the kitten without permission. They don't care what quality the kitten is, what health issues they may have or pass down. All they care about is selling kittens. Reputable breeders are discerning about the cats that they select to breed together, not just for looks but a multitude of reasons including health. 2. Persian Standard Are you really purchasing a Persian? Cat breeds are just like dog breeds. If you mix cats you can get kittens that have some characteristics of a Persian, i.e. long hair, but would you pay the same for a mutt that you would for a pure pedigree? If all you are looking for is a long haired cat, there are plenty in the local shelter. Persians are bred for temperament and good breeders breed for CFA Standard and health. A shelter kitten will come with a lower price up front, but much more cost later in vet bills. Many scammers will try to sell you kittens at high prices with gimmicks such as "tea cup", "doll face", and "munchkin". There is ONLY one type of Persian. The description of the breed is very specific. CFA does not recognize: tea cup, doll face, or munchkin. These are NOT breeds nor part of what it is to be a Persian. Please don't pay more for a Tea Cup. Small Persians are called runts. Doll face are cats that did not meet the Persian standard and are usually sold as pets not for breeding, because breeders do not want to pass the "doll face" down. Reputable breeders don't purposely breed Doll Face. Here you can find the standard for the Persian cat : https://cfa.org/persian/ Notice none of them are "doll face". Breeders advertising tea cup, doll face, and munchkin will not be able to produce registration for these cats, because they are not bred to standard, can't be shown and therefore can't be registered. 3. Shipping Persians are a flat faced breed and since 2018, in the USA you can no longer ship flat faced cats or dogs via cargo. Cargo is the cheapest form of shipping. Before 2018 in the USA, you could ship a kitten/cat anywhere in the USA for approximately $230. Now, you must ship via cabin. Cabin means that the kitten/cat will travel on top of the airplane with a passenger. Therefore cabin shipping, is the price of a regular flight for one person plus approximately $120 that the airline charges for the kitten/cat. Some companies exists that will ship for a flat rate of $450-500. These are travelers that fly for free, such as pilots, airline employees etc. The downside of this is that they "catch" flights when seats are available. Therefore, the kitten/cat might have to wait for a long period of time or take connecting flights. Shipping is a huge red flag. If shipping is under $450 or they ask for additional shipping fees such as shipping insurance, they are a scam. Shipping outside the USA is also very expensive. There is NO cargo shipping allowed in the USA. Think of what the price of an airline ticket for a person would be and expect to pay at least that much. If they ask for travel insurance or extra fees for special accommodations on the airplane, it's a scam. Ask for the airline information and call them directly to see what they are charging. * Purr Kitty has shipped outside the USA as well as within. We currently are no longer offering shipping. Owner must make arrangements. 4. Price of the kitten/cat If you found something too good to be true, it probably is. "You get what you pay for" definitely applies here. Scammers will advertise amazing prices. Back Yard Breeders will have lower prices too. Back Yard Breeders will sell you kittens who's parents have not been DNA tested, who are not fully vetted (probably only one vaccine), and that are not spayed/neutered. With Back Yard Breeders you may not pay a lot at the beginning, but will end up with a lot more on vet bills later. Purchasing a pure bred pedigree Persian is not cheap, but the investment you make will mean a healthy, loving cat for years to come. With Purr Kitty, you will not have any more vet costs until a year later because we provide kittens that have been completely vetted and spayed/neutered. You Also get to see for what your paying for by Zoom or Face Time. 5. Social Media Presence A Cattery that is selling Persians should have a digital footprint, that is there should be pictures, videos, search engines with their information. Do a search, are there negative comments or reviews? Have they been around for a while? Do they have a Facebook or Instagram account? If so, is it new or have they been posting their lovely kittens for years. It's almost impossible now days not to have a digital trail even if you are not computer savvy. A person or company that seems shady and not online is a red flag. What if they only have that ONE website you found them through? Not good! Several scams like fake pictures that were manipulated with Photoshop and are currently out there that have stolen pictures and even video from reputable breeders. They post these pictures on their sites as if they owned these cats. After you send payment, you may even be given a fake address, but there is nothing there and they don't have any kittens. Don't fall victim to these scammers. We at Purr Kitty wish you the best of luck in your search.
